Born in Erfurt on April 20, 1890, David Baumgardt studied philosophy at various universities, and was a lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Berlin, 1924-1935. He emigrated to Great Britain in 1935 and to the United States in 1939, where he taught at various colleges and was consultant in philosophy to the Library of Congress. Dorothy Canfield Fisher was a 20th century American author and a major proponent of the Montessori Method. She spent her adult life in Vermont, where she became friends with Sarah Cleghorn. Elizabeth Biddle Yarnall and her husband, E. Robert Yarnall, were Philadelphia Quakers, active in the American Friends Service Committee relief efforts.
